I only sat 6 at school, max of 8 but dropped English Lit and Latin. I suppose I did sit them when they meant something and before they had to create a new grade as they'd been made so easy everyone could pass them.

Generally I'd agree with you here, but when you're looking at school leavers or new graduates with no work experience to speak of then school exam results are about the only thing you have as an employer as a filtering mechanism before you decide which of the many applicants to interview

I was in the first wave of people sitting GCSEs in 1988. At that time the teachers were still a bit confused about where to pitch their lessons - O-level, CSE or somewhere in between - so they went high and we were pleasantly surprised when we saw the actual papers
The timetable at my comp only allowed a maximum of 8 subjects to be studied, but folks in the top sets for English were also put in for English Lit, which was coursework-only based on essays that we'd already written during the year, so I came out with 9 GCSEs in total (all As, when an A still meant something  ). I would guess that a lot of kids doing many more GCSEs now have multiple maths papers in there somewhere.

thats because its a proper subject

It certainly does.
I didn't do as expected in my GCSE's, or A Levels. I didn't get into the university I wanted - but managed to get on to a similar course elsewhere through clearing.
Once I got away from school a more independent learning/teaching style suited me, coupled with the fact that most employers don't care about GCSE or A Level results I am doing alright for myself - and a damn site better than a lot of my school friends whose results were infinitely better than mine. |
I was similar when I was her age - went to college and found it much better.
She's got some options and to be honest it gave her a kick up the bum that she needed - she's been cruising at school.

So who remembers what they got? I was the last crop of O-levels, and I think I did 9, I know I passed them but can't remember what grades (or subjects).

you should've stuck with latin--understanding 'motion towards' makes the 'romans go home' scene in life of brian really come alive

I agree, I interview people for our grad scheme and internships. At that level you have very little to go off. We are a professional services company (Chartered Surveyors) and invest quite a bit of time and money in getting our grads qualified so you want to see that they can pass an exam. Also we need people to have a reasonable level of numeracy and when a lot of people seem to go down the arts route at A level, a decent maths GCSE is important.
On another note, it’s scary how qualified a lot of them are. Every one seems to have straight A’s, Masters and MBA’s theses days

Ah, but this is the year they made them harder. Allegedly.
Well, harder to get A*, but they still want the same number getting a pass at the equivalent of a 'C' now a 5 iirc. Talk about trying to massage the results (ffs)
