I knew a lad who was a top rower, think he got to about 11th or 12th ranking and just missed out on the '8' for an Olympics, but their training was suffering...and some.

It was way beyond hurting yourself on the rowing machine/lake; they'd do runs barefeet in the snow, through stinging nettles all manner of torture - just general suffering.

I also remember those two pipped for a gold in 2012, think it was about 10 minutes after the race and Redgrave had to virtually scoop them up out of the boat and hold them up for the interviews....

GCN latched onto this week and claimed that cyclists suffer more than other athletes. I immediately thought of horrendous suffering in ultras, and how the marathon in iron distance is many times harder than the preceding sit down affair on the bike. Then I thought of my broken bones in bike crashes...
