I've only ever done one week on a 'camp' (Playitas in 2010). Smashed out 30 hours. I had to take much of that very steady! It was late November, so almost utterly pointless; but we had to take the booking before the end of the year, as it was a legacy of the ash-cloud cancellations that April.
Consistency is the key, not one big week in a sea of <10h ones. |
I couldn’t give a monkeys really. I’m going away with some friends to ride my bike every day and have a laugh. I’ve given up all hopes of tikes for the next 3 months and am going to enjoy myself.
And one massive week in the middle of a load of <10hr weeks is better than not doing it.

Sorry Phil, it wasn't a dig at you, I'm quite envious that you're able to go off and enjoy some great riding!

I know it wasn’t, my reply does sound harsh
I’ve had such a sh!tty year in terms of consistency that it will just be nice to get a sold week in. One of the days will be 12-14 hours (if I make the lay cutoff).
No doubt I’ll be wiped out for the next week and do 3 hours!

I went out to Mallorca last week and got a 28 hour week in. Very little junk mileage in there, even our "long ride" included 2 20 minute sweetspot efforts and a 45 minute threshold effort up a climb.
Not only was this a great fun week with mates, it also rejuvenated my training having been slogging it out on the turbo and in the dark for months. Even if it has no added training benefit over my regular 10-12 hour weeks, it was a good way to spend the time!

I've done an early season 'training camp' for the last 4 years & have myself just come back from a week in Mallorca. Sets you up for the season and gives you consistent long hours in the saddle that is hard to achieve normally.
Without the stress of work and daily life you should also in theory be able to absorb more training stress, and of course it's fun week away with the lads.

Swam 1.9km straight through this morning. Nice and easy 1:39/100m.
Hopefully get the extra 2 minutes from a slightly short course, wetsuit and swimming on someone’s feet.
Straight out of the pool and onto the bike.
Rode 89.7km in 2hrs 35mins.
233W NP, Max 20 minute power of 237W.
Got caught by bin men, angry commuters and roadworks spring up mid ride.
Lost some speed coming back in, just making up 2km to get it closer to 90km.
Straight off the bike and into what some people would call a “run”
But it was awful. That’s my third brick run since 2013.
Managed 5km before walking home.
Thoughts?
My TT bike fit isn’t great. Lots of little adjustments needed that I can’t be arsed to make.
Need to eat more on the bike (riding less than four hours for the most part means it’s not really needed)
More bricks required. I’d naively assumed my current run form would just work off the bike. Oh, how very wrong I was!
Should probably throw some swim speed sets back in

That looks like a great workout, and I am sure that with the adrenaline of a race, the run will seem much easier

Cheers mattsurf.
I love test days.
Derby Tri used to have Wed PM sprint triathlons for £3-£5 in the summer.
And aquathlons.
It were proper good.
Had a look round these parts...an evening club aquathlon wants £19 :O
Thought I’d just do a bimble on me tod!
I don’t need to wait for the race to know where I’m weak now.
So can really focus my efforts these next eight weeks in getting to the 113 line battle hardened.
I’m doing an actual race on Sunday (400 pool/30k hilly/8k flat)
Today showed the 4% stay on for 5km with a tight knot and aren’t too hard to get on.
Open water swimming on Saturday, too!!!

Been an easy week for me so far, I've been to Leeds twice for some lab testing for a PhD study which has been interesting.
But up until today only 2 hours cycling, 1 swim & 2k running. But it is supposed to be rest week.
Did a local (fast) 10K today, but in view of my injuries and huge loss of form I offered to help a friend try to get a PB, she fell about 20s short in the end but TBF her recent training has been aimed at London rather than a 10k.
I'm actually pleased that I'm not totally crippled so hopefully the niggles are going.
Hoping for a long bike tomorrow, up to 4 hours and might get out again on Monday. Will keep off running for a few more days probably.

Nice one, JeffB.
Great weather for cycling.
A bit too hot to be running.
And nowhere near warm enough for swimming...
...as I found out this morning.
10.6 degrees is unswimmable for me.
I could barely breath once my head was under.
Managed to do four strokes (two out, two back)
Then stand there in the water waiting to get used to it for twenty minutes.
Hopefully, the lake will be warmer than the dock in a fortnight...

Job done! 16 weeks run training from 31st December. 1000km with no one week below 50km (consistency is key for me). A fairly old fashioned mix of speed, strength and stamina sessions. Also a small matter of 8kg lost (82kg to 74kg).
2 weeks taper and then Prague Marathon here we come!

Good luck in Prague Mad Mike, any target?
Ha, Poet, I've seen a few people threatening to get into our local lake which is about 11.5c ATM, far too cold for me, I'd come out blue

Thanks Jeff.
Would be very happy with sub 4 hours. My last competitive (non Ironman) marathon was 33 years ago in 1986 @ 2hrs 41mins!
Very happy to be fit, healthy and injury free. It feels good

I’m a triathlete again!
It was fun. Grinding up Birdy Brow for ten minutes in a 42/23 at 300W, 55rpm!
My wedding band came off in the swim, so I had to dive down to retrieve that. Then my noseclip came off and I snapped it trying to get it back on.
Went through the first 100 in 1:19, a bit annoyed to get out in 6:11.
Took a while to run to T1, 28th swim spilt.
T1 piece of pie, 7th quickest, Making up 14 places
Bike was hillyAF. Not great at descending anyhow, on a TT bike, not a chance.
Never has been my strong point, 20th split. Lost three places.
T2 got a shout out for how rapid I was, 3rd split. No places made up.
Run was billed as flat. WAS IT F***. Not hilly, just undulating and hard and hot. Managed to muster the 9th best split at 4:04/km for the and drag myself into 12th overall.
Decent comeback race.

consistency is certainly key, but don't blame the concept if you don't use the extra 'camp' time wisely...
