Hello,

Has anyone added an IP address to the banned list? Some of our people can't log on and are getting a "Banned from the forum" message. I can't work out how to delete IP addresses from the banned list!

I added a block on some IP addresses in Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh and Phillipines where spam was coming from.

What IP address are they getting the banned message from ?

Are they sure its an IP address ban and not a ban from trying to use one shot email address hosts which the spammers use ?

All that should be necessary is to find the IP address or range in the banlist, click on it, and click Submit and it should be reversed - that the phpbb software version stopped being supported 8 years ago is a inor issue but could explain why its been difficulty to add domains to the banlist in the past.

T-Rex can't log on and gets the banned message (from NZ). I can only think it's an IP address issue. His email, username etc etc is good. I've logged on as him from London and it works. If you go back to his last post and click on the IP address you'll see how vast the IP address location library is, I assume he's been collected up in an IP address banning.

I was going to delete all no wildcard IP addresses but can't find a way of doing it.

"All Non-wildcard" that was meant to say. This keyboard will only accept input at a certain speed and I keep dropping letters. Very Happy

I'll log on as Dr TT later and see if that opens anything up. But don't let on that I know his password. Wink

EDIT: Nope, nuffin.

I guess a VPN would get around it though?

VPN certainly would.

I had a look at the archived phpbb2.0 forums (current version is 7 which shows how old this is) and the very question was asked and te helpful answer doesnt work albeit its what you would expect.

I suspect its a file permissions issue, as in can add to a file but not delete.

This implies there is probably a banlist table somewhere in the file structure which can be deleted. Most of entries are very IP specific and mostly pointless and its only the wider range ones that stop the thick spammers.

Three more pointless spam account creation attempts this morning.

Its been actually very quiet of late mainly as they can still register, but not post from a lot of the the dodgy spam factories in India, Pakistan, China etc. due to IP blocks.

Its a pity we cannot IP block account creation but one day Gareth will respond and it can all be sorted out.
