Selling a phone on Gumtree. Buyer has agreed a price and claims to have made a payment through PayPal. I've received a "confirmation of payment" email from paypal stating it's been made but pending credit to my account until I've shipped the item. Alarm bells ringing -

- PayPal email does not address me by name but rather my email address and their help pages state will always be by name
- Nothing showing in my paypal account as pending or otherwise so nowhere to enter my tracking number to release the payment as stated in the email
- buyer insisting immediate shipment as sons birthday in a few days
- They proactively added money to the cost for shipping and I didn't ask them to

As I'm typing this i'm convincing myself it's a scam. The PayPal email is pretty good though.

Anyone with more PayPal knowledge than I familiar with this type of story?

I don't have enough experience of PayPal to say if it's a scam or not, but it certainly sounds like one. as in all things - if in doubt, don't do it.

a close escape. many have been victims of a PayPal scam where you do get paid, ship goods, but then buyer claims items never arrived so they do a claim back on the money paid and seller loses totally.

That's happened to me, however, if posted recorded delivery and you have proof of delivery PayPal will side with you

If you have the delivery address, you can send the boys round on a house call Idea Twisted Evil (was it a private address, as this is an audit trail)

Oops late to the party on this one, but yes, I remember reading something recently about this being the 'latest' Paypal scam and it's becoming quite widespread. Glad you found out in time.

Yes and according to google maps not the nicest of areas!

Selling stuff on Gumtree brings out all the chancers it would appear.

I'd suggest leaving it a few weeks, then sending a letter with a little note in it, merely stating "we are watching you". I'd suggest using a post box, not Recorded Delivery Wink

Should put the wind up them Very Happy
