I did it yesterday as well, never managed to find a decent wheel to hang onto, came home in 5:08, pretty pleased with it given the terrible conditions

I finally got in this year.
Loved the big race feel but too crowded to race (not that I do speed anyhow).
Nightmare having to stop for a pee too often at the drinks stations as they were a ball ache - too may bikes on the road for a crafty side of the road job.
very enjoyable experience tho' all round.
One to entice my two boys into cycling (if they can get an entry!)

Did it as well.
I don't mind the Rain. It was warm rain really. Stings he face a bit coming down off NewLands Corner though.
Couldn't find a group to work with past Chiswick Bridge or so. So average speed dropped a bit. A friend who got out into an early group and hung with them (doing his turn as required) smashed round 4h50ish! For reference our training rides show we're roughly the same speed! And Im a better climber than him. But as I spent too much time on my own...
Got a puncture (like thousands of others) I will therefore ignore my Chip Time and go with my Garmins "moving time" of 5h57
I've entered the ballot for next year since this is a "unfinished business" situation A few friends have been inspired to enter as well. If I can't get a place, I'll go and support them on the day

I didn't enter the last two years but I noticed that to enter the ballot for 2019 they were asking for Strava account athlete numbers.
At a guess they are trying to sort out estimates from complete fiction and to work out who really knows how long they will take.

Do you think there's an element of data harvesting too? Because I can't think they'll be combing through individual accounts to find out how fast people are; too time consuming.

Not sure tbh. My guesstimate was from a century a few years back. And was feasible. I didn't get through the ballot and rode for Tommy's in the end.

Last year I did 4h47 going b@lls out but only found someone to work with in the last 5 miles. I spent 95 miles just going past people solo, was gobsmacked I was 'the fastest' one out there. I didnt have a particularly early wave start as it was part of an Amstel RideTogether Team of 4, so maybe all the faster riders go off earlier?

They will undoubtedly be using a machine to collect data wherever they can. Even on locked accounts, they can look at the historical mileage curve and draw some conclusions if they strip out the HTML data which makes up the chart.
Certainly there won't be an individual doing the data search but you could see a data harvesting programme producing a set of variance data showing whose estimate was the biggest BS and excluding them
I would imagine they could also possible crawl any public Strava data from the earlier rides to get at individuals data - all if they really want to.
But I'm not convinced they would bother and would more likely just draw names out randomly as there's no advantage to them specifically by spending a future to work out who to exclude.

I noticed that they've also included a question about the amount of experience that you have of riding in groups and using hand signals to point out hazards. Not really sure what they can do with that information, because everyone is going to be starting in a big group, regardless of their group riding experience.
I've done the event 4 times and I reckon things start to get a bit congested if you start much after 06:30, but even if you are in one of the first waves you'll generally find a load of people there who aren't that fast.
The RideLondon team modelled their event on the Cape Town Cycle Tour (formerly the Argus), but the seeding at the CTCT is much more tightly controlled and the earlier waves there generally set off and ride hard as big pelotons, shedding people as they go. At RideLondon, there might be a few people in a start group who want to ride hard together, but generally the waves break up from the start.

I noticed this and thought it was a bit odd and intrusive, so elected to omit that field.
I don't know whether I should be surprised or scared that they're going to those lengths to audit those people applying!

Not really - when you are 8-10 times oversubscribed and you get 10% nt even starting because they hadn't bothered to do any mileage or another 10% drop out because they have never cycled more than 30 miles, its to be applauded they try and filter potential DNf and DNS's out in the first place.

Do you know for fact they are potentially filtering out DNS and DNF or just making it up?
