Do all that and you might get close to the advertised battery figures on a relatively new watch.

This is all really good information, but why doesn't the watch just have a low power mode where all this is set for you? Or a custom power mode where you can select which features to leave on or turn off? Much easier than changing a dozen settings in swim, bike and run modes, forgetting which modes to set the night before your long distance event and only remembering halfway round the bike. As most people only do 1 or 2 >12hr events a year, it's not the sort of information you are going to remember easily.

From memory, there is a (non-garmin) device targeted at trail running that does this. Would have thought it should be fairly standard.

There is, the fenix 5/935 battery is huge, lasts ages.

There is, the fenix 5/935 battery is huge, lasts ages.

Bought a Fenix 5 - battery is pretty good - lasted for my 12:40 IM Smile

and was still good for a few days after just working as a watch!!

The 735 was effectively released as a "multisport light" watch. It had smaller battery, no quick release kit, no barometric altimeter, no wifi, etc.

Realistically, they had to cut the battery life in an effort to protect their sales of the higher end watches. I always saw the 735 as a way of trying to get runners who occasionally swim/bike to spend a bit more. That said, for anyone not doing full distance, it's probably the best value tri watch Garmin have ever released.

What do you think of the Fenix 5? I really like the look of it but its eye-wateringly expensive.

That said, I'm going to retire from Ironman, the day I can't finish one within the battery life of a 735XT. Life goals Very Happy

That's a strong statement. Given my real world testing has shown the 24hr battery life of a 920xt actually results in 14hrs, the same drop off in the 735 battery life would require you to break 8hrs10!

EDIT - that is with the watch being 2yrs old, so a new 735 would get a bit more. But Whisk and others have implied it's not even up to 12hrs, so with a bit of age, that will quickly fall below 10 Razz

What do you think of the Fenix 5? I really like the look of it but its eye-wateringly expensive.

I paid £385 for the Fenix 5 off Amazon - I thought that was a good price? Just looked at 935's which appear to be more?

(Fenix 5's are now £349 on Amazon)
