instead of burning it down Mr Fawkes, why not help rebuilt it? I am sure that there must be plenty of hereditary peers who would love to get stuck back in there and do the hard work. Given they are already peers it’s not as if they want the title, they may actually want to return to doing the job.
Seriously though Gus, I have spent two decades popping up here and there acting a bit like the governments « nudge unit » provoking thought, getting people to see what is staring at them, and so on.
I mean even my Tory MP once visited me, agreed with me on one specific point on an impossible situation Cameron created and placed me in, which he did not think that he could do anything about, but now some years later, has now been partially dealt with through policy, for some at least. Being a pain in the ass can get Results.
The U.K. is a bit wonky just now, but it can be fixed. It just needs people who care and who can see past the agendas, motivations and desires for money and power.

Today’s Independent online. Seriously don’t underestimate just how influential Russia could become over the next decade.
At least I don’t seem to be the only one who sees EU and Russia cooperation to be a possible solution to changing political events. Be better if the EU could rise to the challenge, but if Macron is doing this, then I guess it can’t.

Russia has nukes which it will never use and a p*ss poor economy which is utterly dependent upon oil. Its is 11th or 12th in the GDP table depending upon how it is measured.
California, Texas and New York city are bigger.
Russia is irrelevant in the scheme of things.

I realise that this may sound odd from me (why change  ) but I really don’t understand why some people « want with so much conviction » positions of such power.
I sort of get why you might if things were screwed up and you genuinely thought that you could make things better, but all this « I am destined to be President or Prime Minister » etc, I just don’t get.
Surely such jobs are full of manipulations, threats, bribes, false friends, etc and that’s before you even begin to consider the responsibilities of such positions. You literally can enable or kill people through your policies. And the law of unintended consequences being what it is. And furthermore the fact that power corrupts and blinds (through ego) is not an insignificant issue.
Just baffles me.

I agree. From the very first series of 24, there was no way I'd want to run a Presidential primary campaign, let alone actually take on the top job.

And let’s not forget how Russia has gained the upper hand over America in Syria. And it’s alleged influence on western elections, it’s alleged funding of upcoming politicians (that’s half a trillion pounds please  ) it’s well ingrained spy network (currently reading « The KGBs poison factory » by Boris Volodarsky, which even notes P62, « our people sat in the House of Lords, in parliament, major newspapers, the bbc, the biggest banks and even the London stock exchange. »).
Mind you I am biased, I have a very observant Russian entered my life. 
Added...idle thought...do you think that all those Establishment figures who are owned by Russia (if true obviously) got owned through money, women or blackmail. If one is Foul Old Ron, it simply has to be a sex scandal with a beautiful swallow. Must be a nightmare for our spooks. Keeping track that is.

Go talk to a global economist (and I mean a real one, not an academic) rather than listening to third hand waffle on the BBC.
Its the posturing of an ageing bully, which is slowly realising that the bluster doesn't work any more. If they decided to do something stupid, like invade a NATO country, their economy would collapse overnight.
Russia is being slowly strangled by an ever increasing dependence upon oil, and when Putin goes, the place will descend into anarchy with little regard to the West.
Go on, go to a lecture on Russia and you'll get a very different story than the worry bead stories you get from the BBC.

Is this one of those alterative fact, post-truth things?
Russia's invasion and annexation of Crimea was pretty real.
Russia's involvement in Syria also very real.
Russia's continual "testing" of our air space is real.
Russia's extrajudicial killing of people on UK soil is real.
etc, etc, etc.
Perhaps you are right that they are an aging bear that will die in the near future, but for now they still have teeth and claws and have shown a willingness to use them.
Irrelevant, it think not. At least not right now.
