Am I the only one who can remember the days when you filled in a coupon from the Radio Times with your choice and posted it to the BBC?  I guess in those days the programme was the "Sports review of the Year" and SPoTY was just something that happened at the end.
I guess with this approach you won't get sports governing bodies, websites etc lobbying their members to vote for their preferred candidate in the weeks before the program.

They should make a bigger thing of these 'heroes in our community' awards than of professional sport. Or is that not conducive to getting us bristling with national pride?

Sports (well, kind of)
Personality - not so much
Popularity - undoubtedly
Mind you - cyclists have won three times in the last 10 years.

If they short list GT, don't they also have to shortlist CF and SY? Then you split the vote 3 ways.
It's just a light entertainment show with a sports theme, but I quite enjoy it, and prefer it to some jungle or singing based light entertainment.
