Stealing the title shamelessly from the quite excellent The sub 3 hour marathon training thread but with a more achievable milestone for us mere mortals (and biffers).

Anybody else with me?

With a 5k PB of 20:21 I'd be right up for it if I hadn't forgot to train in the past few month. At the mo running 5k at all would be a problem. But give me a few weeks, maybe it'll be back on the cards.

My plan: I did a 20:31 last September (@198lbs), and a 21:24 this month (@203lbs). I reckon if I can get down to 13.5 stones and keep the same kind of power then I'll be laughing. Well, laughing after I've recovered anyway.

So my training strategy is going to be more of what I've been doing recently - lots of cycle commuting, eating slightly less and a few quality running sessions.

I'm aiming for the end of September this year, although this isn't a hard and fast goal.

Yes it is.

5k<20mins = hard and fast. And it is your goal.

I'm in. This is one I know I should be able to do, but never have. PB 20:02 at Richmond parkrun in 2008, and 20:15 this year at Kingston parkrun. After DITL, I'll be back for another go, and will get up more than 10 minutes before the start.

I'd say a good track session would sort this out. It's boring and repetitive but put a watch on your arm and see the time fly by and start to fall.

I'm in the same boat weightwise aswell. 85(ish)kgs depending on whether it's a good day and i think just shifting this down a pound or 2 will bring me my goal set below

I'd like to get my 5km time down from 18:30 to 17mins so a worthwhile thread IMO.

Maybe it should include sub 40 10km in the title as well with your best for both??

Leigh195 5km 18:18 - 10km 40:18

Not running at the moment due to injury, but it looks like a good goal for before the end of the year. I'm in.

Aye aye - why not. I'm a way off at the mo due to injury, but know I can run sub 20 for five and have always wanted to run sub 40 for ten. I'll lurk away....

Good idea. My PB is 21:01 and I keep meaning to put some effort into going faster. Hopefully this will help me get round to it.

Maybe in a parkrun over the summer, but more likely in the autumn with some tri's in my legs from this summer and IMCH next summer to forget about for a while!

Definitely in. I have 3 goals for 2010, and have achieved 2 of them. This is the 3rd that currently escapes me.

As a benchmark I did a 4km timed run round the track, this weekend just gone, in 15:42 (3:56/km pace). Now I just need to work at being able to hang on another km!!

I'd be up for it. Got a fair way to go though as my PB is around 21:30. It has been a longish term goal of mine to go under 20min for 5k though... Where do we sign up??? Smile
