Out with new cycling club today. Had a nice gentle / social ride through the Welsh Lanes to end up at Henllan )local village) to watch end of Tour De France on big screen. Landlord had put a spread on for us. Well in to my 1000 mile base now before Sue and I jet off to Lanzarote for a nice break.

Well, strength in the legs now from biking. Sue and I to slowly implement longer walks now to strengthen tendons and other bits the bike does not. Least dropped the weight. Just may mean I can carry more. Off to bunkhouse in mid-wales to do so hilly walks in a week or two. This is so different. Mr Cobb could be called for advice later on in the year as I think the only terrain he has not tackled is the moon.

Finished Early

They let me go early. Played with the rota, so now can start to put some good hiking and MTB strengthening days in for Everest Base Camp next year. Planned a 6am start, but weather dodgy in this part of North Wales. Not underestimating this challenge one bit. Besides, totally different from allother stuff done over past 37 years.

No more swimming

Been a long time recovering. I did go back to work but too much for me now. In the process of working my notice. No idea when or what I want to do.

Sadly, although I have made major progress since breaking my shoulder and having my rotator cuff rebuilt, I will no longer have absolute full Range of Motion back that will enable me to do front crawl.

On the upside, there is sufficient recovery for me to now cycle and climb out of the saddle and even jog although that hurts my legs more than my shoulder. Duathlon...too heavy at the moment having gained 2 stone whilst inactive.

Sue and I sat down and discussed new challenges as both done IM, I have been a club cyclist since I was 13. However in 2012, we joined up with Discovery Adventure and had an awesome time in London to Paris Bike Ride. The same company does an Everest Base Camp Trek which we have both said we will do.

Anyway, new horizons beckon. Glad for what I have. All new to me this stuff, but plenty of time to build up. :)

Supposed to be having home visit from work to see about phased return. They got my medical papers from Occupational Health. Going back when fit to do so. Work to live. Done my bit. If he can get full rotation, I will take that as preference. Besides other things to do apart from work. My wife died at 50. I put me first these days.

Haria & Mirador

Back into swing of things now. Got another 2 weeks left in Lanzarote. Fitness base rising exponentionally. Hope the British weather does not dampen that or I'll be out here again

Running really showing signs of improving and 10 min miling fine now with no aches. (Used to run 6.5 :? )

Good hard ride today up to Haria, then dropped down and back up to Mirador Del Rio. Worth it for the view. Nasty speed wobble after hitting pothole and double puncture on way down. Lucky to stay upright.

Plan to do whole IM course before I leave.

Back Running

Two weeks back into run training. Taking things very easy. Ran with Sue tonight along the front at Puerto del Carmen for 40mins. Also entered a half marathon at the end of January. Think as the weight drops I will obviously go faster and longer, but from past experience, caution is needed as been injured too many times.

Lots of people gone from 8 years ago on here. Mind you, my first Ironman was in 2001 so its a long time all round and it really is hard to get fit like you were when your approaching 50

Well got circa 6 months of training so its just a question of keeping motivated I guess - sometimes thats the hardest part

Social Network Overload

Following on from recent conversation and too much time spent on Facebook, think its only right that I chart my jorney to my last Tri on here. Presently in Lanzarote for a month base building for IM Lanza 2013.

Keep it short and sweet.

Funny to see how I have changed in gallery in nearly 8 years. So today I did 53 miles from PDC to La Santa and back. Slightly overweight, but nowhere like I was.
Pulse coming down slowly and easing back into things in a pleasant part of the world

Think strength there now

Well, after the crap weather and festive shifts, emerged from doing a lot of strength training in the gym remembering the great advice of old Bob Mem. Honestly triathlon, even cycling is just not a sport for uk. Too many restrictions. Neither is my other passion, motorcycling.

Using the MTB at the moment with slick type tyres to potter round the lanes as no rush. Once I get obsessed, I get obsessed about not doing other stuff and it becomes a roundabout. Easy does it. Looking back at the car free roads of late 70's early 80's when life was so free were the best days in my book. Too many conflicting coaching opinions out there from people who dont know you as an athlete. Me thinks biggest thing to work on is the mind as throw everything at somebody and say do this that that and the other, but if coach just writes a book, can seriously mess people up and create anxiety.

Anyway, rant over. Easy way out of that. Just dont read the books and train on feel as its only a sport and one day you'll retire and somebody is always going to beat you unless your superhuman or can afford your genes to be doctored.

Wish you all a safe year ahead. Keep plodding away. One thing to remember. Tomorrow, wont be the same as today. You'll be older and your bidy will have adjusted to whatever load you have applied to it - presuming you can be arsed

Hung in there

Suppose Sunday was a bit of an acid test regarding how I am regaining fitness. Turned up for the Sunday ride expecting to take a hammering only to find out that I could not only ride tempo with the guys, but could actually sit on the front and power over the crest of some of the climbs. I can only get better if I am sensible too.

Was going to do another run session today, but decided that after a hectic day at work, rest was the most important thing and let the body adapt to the increase in load I am putting on it. Basically, rest, good food and good to go if I need to tomorrow.

Vic - Thanks. Remembering one session and one day at a time :)

Sue - Thank you. Remember that Rome was not built in a day, but was destroyed in one
